A ‘Green Passport’ campaign launched March 7th at a world tourism fair aims at shrinking the environmental footprint of vacation travelers, according to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP).The goal of the internet-based campaign, introduced at the Berlin Tourism Fair, is to raise tourists’ awareness of their ability to contribute to sustainable development by making responsible holiday choices, the agency said at the press release.

“Packing a Green Passport along with airline tickets, the swimming costume and the sun lotion means tourists no longer need to leave their green credentials at home but can make them part of the holiday of a lifetime,” UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner said at the fair.

  1. I checked out the green passport project site – its a pretty fun setup, all interactive and whatnot. Basically the campaign gives you tips in most of the areas of travelling to make sure your footprint is light – for example, regarding where to stay they warn “be careful of places that talk the talk but don’t walk the walk”, then providing some questions to ask the facility that are revealing about their sustainability policies.

I won’t lie, I was hoping for a little direction on business names etc., but it makes sense that the UN cannot endorse any particular businesses. However, it would be nice to see a UN green label application program for places that claim to be “green” to be assessed by a standard criteria (and not just a self-checklist like most green labels have!!) and then be listed… this would encourage more companies to take a greener route! But oh the complexities of such a move… it would traverse into standards that differ in each country, which can be complicated. In any case, good to see the green passport on the move – if the consumers start demanding green, than the industry will have to answer…
