The Ziggurat Project of Dubai to be 100% Sustainable

Oh Dubai, Dubai–the amazing architectural innovations continue! This time I came across some news about a carbon-neutral, solar-powered futurist design that can house one million people. The design is modeled after the ancient pyramids of old and is being debuted in October at the Cityscape Dubai, the largest business-to-business real estate investment exhibition. (ecoworldly.com)
It seems a natural process now, to enter a state of awe when reading a new press release out of Dubai. The Ziggurat Project, as its called, is a 2.3 square kilometer building, by Timelinks, a Dubai-based environmental design company. It plans on being 100% carbon neutral and will harness energy from its solar panels and even wind turbines. Even cars would be unnecessary as the structure would be connected by a 360 degree network–both horizontally and vertically–throughout the complex.
For all its awesomeness though, my only qualm is that this whole region isn’t for “the average Joe” (or Jane of course). The money needed to live, or even visit, such a place isn’t for the “normal ranges of society” and that saddens me. The concepts of sustainable architecture are not unique to this Ziggurat community in Dubai.
The investments in the region are rampant and make these far-fetched goals possible there and examples of what’s possible for the rest of the world’s communitites. My one desire out of all this–possible or not possible on a commercial level (yet)–is that these strategies are adopted into new models for living sustainably.
