Volunteer Opportunities
Get involved in the local sustainability movement and make a difference in your community! The below roles are simply related to tasks that The Green Rocket is prioritizing for current projects – but don’t limit yourself to these if you have other ideas you’d like to contribute – simply get in touch! All questions and interest can be directed to hr@thegreenrocket.com.
In terms of time commitment, as a volunteer you tell us what level of commitment you are interested in contributing, and we will orient interests and opportunities with you accordingly. We look forward to and value working with you in any capacity!
Current Opportunities:
Research Assistant
The research assistants support projects within The Green Rocket with data collection & maintenance, grant research, database organization, and various other essential tasks to ensure day-to-day efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Effective communication and interpersonal relationship skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a research team
- Effective analytical and research thinking skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- Demonstrated previous related research experience an asset
Time commitment: Minimum 1-3 hours per week. Work is completely remote/online.
Web Manager
The Web Manager is responsible for the maintenance of the project’s web content. This may include, but is not limited to, timely releases of content generated by the content development team, internal requests for website updates and management of plug-ins such as the community calendar and resource directory if applicable.
Qualifications:
- Excellent working knowledge of HTML code
- Familiarity with WordPress and related plugins
- Ability to work well with minimal supervision, and communicate effectively with team members.
- Experience in PHP, Javascript and other coding is an asset
- Knowledge or interest in Drupal or other platforms is an asset
Time commitment: Minimum 1 – 3 hours per week. Work is completely remote/online.
Graphic Designer
The Graphic Designer will work with Marketing in continuing concept design and creation of brand identity for The Green Rocket: KW that can be easily maintained across a diverse range of print and web projects. The graphic designer will also have the opportunity to analyze and give input on branding design and corporate identity in the implementation of our marketing strategy. Tasks may include but are not limited to the creation and revision of print materials, signage, web design, corporate slide decks, and business card maintenance.
Qualifications:
- Experience in and understanding of design and branding concepts
- Ability to work on a team and effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format
- Knowledge of Photoshop an asset
Time commitment: Minimum 2 – 3 hours per week. Work mainly remote/online.
Social Media Manager
The social media manager will be working to implement and maintain the social media strategy, fostering online community engagement, and building relationships with community members, related organizations and local businesses using various social media platforms. This will utilize interpersonal communication, technical, and creative skills to effectively use social media platforms to strategically create exposure while building/maintaining relationships within the community. A team of community ambassadors will eventually work to support the Social Media Manager.
Qualifications:
- Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in written and verbal format
- Able to build and maintain relationships with all involved parties
- Customer service, editorial, and/or marketing experience
- Strong understanding of technical elements
- Extremely strong understanding of social media platforms (Twitter/LinkedIn/YouTube/Facebook, etc)
Time Commitment: Minimum 3 – 5 hours per week. Work is completely remote/online.
Marketing Coordinator
The marketing coordinator will collaborate with public relations and the content manager to use local media outlets, specifically online (Web 2.0 and Social Media) in the creation and distribution of promotional materials. Using design, innovation and strategic marketing skills, the candidate will work to create a campaign targeted to improve The Green Rocket’s branding and connection with the greater Waterloo Region community.
Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to research and innovate marketing strategy based on a target audience/outcome
- Interest in social media and community movements
Time Commitment: Minimum 1 – 3 hours per week. Work is mostly remote/online, accommodating for student schedules.
Public Relations Coordinator
The Public Relations Coordinator will work with the executive director and with marketing in fostering and institutionalizing relationships with community partners, including groups, businesses, and individuals. This will utilize creative planning and communication skills, maintaining correspondences and distribution of information/news to community partners, as well as the potential to innovate and execute events or initiatives to improve collaboration and public participation in the project and assess their impact.
Qualifications:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to research, recognize and connect with strategic and influential community partners
- Professional networking capacity
- Interest in community movements
- High energy, initiative and motivation
Time Commitment: Minimum 1 – 3 hours per week. Work can be remote, accommodating for student schedules.
