With a concern for public awareness and sustainability, the Region of Waterloo has authored a comprehensive and accessible strategic plan to tackle environmental issues within the Waterloo region, entitled “The Region of Waterloo Environmental Sustainability Strategy”. The Green Rocket KW’s Content Development Manager, Jill Kolb, provides an overview of the document in this post.

An offshoot of University of Waterloo’s “Alternatives Journal”, “Green Book Reviews” launched in May, coinciding with the magazine’s annual books issue.
Alternative Journal would put out an issue featuring green books. In the last few years the “green” topic has exploded and now the magazine has opted for an alternative direction.
With a 40th anniversary just around the corner, the respected environmental publication had an eye to growing the audience, expanding online, and finding a place to showcase the ever-expanding list of print resources.

Erb Street Mennonite Church organized an event joined by Mennonite Central Committee Ontario, Greening Sacred Spaces and the Mennonite Savings and Credit Union that brought about a dozen vendors together–some selling solar panels, some geothermal technology systems and others renewable energy technology–to offer the community an information night focused on sharing information about reducing power consumption and producing renewable energy locally.
Darren Kropf, co-ordinator of the Mennonite committee’s Ontario’s Creation Care program said that “the night is ment to fulfill many goals.” Mainly it provides a bridge for those interested in …

The Earth Day Eco-Showcase, presented by the University of Waterloo and the Residential Energy Efficiency Project (REEP), will highlight solar success stories with three home and business owners in Waterloo Region.
Some examples of speakers at the event include:
Tim Barrie discussed how his business benefits from solar technologies including photovoltaic (electricity-generating) panels, solar water heaters and solar air heaters. Barrie has generated solar power on his Cambridge asparagus farm since 2007. He will speak about the new Green Energy Act and a government program that doubles the revenue generated by the solar panels …
